"Right." It hadn't slipped Asai's notice that it was cooler inside than out, but he hadn't really thought much of it. Climate control is, after all, ubiquitous in civilized areas.
Asai remembered what an old human spacer had told him once about human attitudes toward magic, something said very soon after they first went into space: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Maybe these people didn't still know what it was, probably nano of some sort, but they knew that it did what it did. It's "magic".
"So I'm curious now. What other magic do you have here?"

Obaba had gotten up by now and was starting to brew something else; throwing lizard parts and many strange herbs in the pot.
"Perhaps psionic abilities I'd suppose." was the old woman smirking at him, it looked like it. "Tho' hardly any humans here manifest it. We have not technology on this world, just psionics and true arcane magics. The local tribes here, the ones that have always been here, are psionic in nature. We'll probably see a few today; this village has to pay its dues to them."

Asai nodded until Obaba had finished mentioning the locals.
"Dues? What are these locals like, besides psionic? Dangerous?"

The old woman walked to the crystaline window and looked out, smoothing back her silvered hair with her hands.
"Well...the natural owners of this planet are psionic creatures yes, they're a tad....um...short tempered? They let these humans stay because they don't seem to want to expand. I'm sure if they tried the local tribes would ;lay the smack down'" There are the sound of a strange horn, one that blatted like a dying goat and there was much scrabbling and yelling outside the hut.
"Oh well it looks like they're here."

Asai stood up, gently putting the teacup down. "Well, I suppose I'm going to be meeting them."
